Changed security under Windows Vista make installation of all BASP and WinBasp programs more difficult than under earlier operating systems.

WinBasp:

Under Vista, for the BASP suite (seriation, correspondence analysis etc.)  use only the WinBasp shell installer winbasp.exe. Do not use Baspwin1..4.zip.

They will cause serious security conflicts with the Vista protection services.

All other programs, e.g. AirPhoto, RadCor, PerCor, CastCor may be installed using their normal installers.

1) You must log on to Vista with an account that has administrator rights.

2a)  Use the Windows Explorer to run all Winbasp and BASP installation programs.

or

2b)  Create a command line shortcut on the desktop by right clicking on the desktop and entering cmd.exe.

3a) Find a downloaded installation program with the Explorer, right click on the name, select "Run as Administrator" and run the chosen installation program.

or

3b) Right click on the command line desktop icon and select  "Run as Administrator", enter the installation file name and execute it. normally.

Special Note for the BASP Suite:

By default, the winbasp.exe installer will install a shell program called WinBaspShell.exe which runs all the other programs in the BASP suite from one dialog box.  If you have a permanent access code for the older BASP version, this may also be used for the new shell.

The installer will offer to place all the files on C:\WINBASP.  You may change this to another drive or partition, and you may also change the directory name, but that name must not be longer than 8 characters and must not contain any blanks.

Other Programs:

Programs except the BASP suite, help problem:

Windows Vista no longer directly supports the help file format used since Windows 3.1 and up to and including Windows XP.

The BASP suite under WinBaspShell substitutes a compatible help file processor where required so that the help files in that suite which date back to 1994 can still be read.

The other programs, e.g. AirPhoto, PerCor, RadCor, CastCor, Slides0, AirRegister required the use of a file called winhlp32.exe to display help information, but in Vista, attempting to open help brings up an error message stating that this is no longer supported.  It refers the user to a Microsoft  Web site which explains in great detail that a new compatible version can be downloaded from their download page.

The latest versions of  AirPhoto, PerCor, RadCor, CastCor, Slides0, AirRegister  use a Vista-compatible help file.  Others will be modified as soon as possible.  In the meantime:

Using winhlp32.exe from Windows  XP:

You can install the updated version offered by the Microsoft web site when you get the Vista error message. You can also override the Vista restrictions if you have access to a machine running Windows XP as follows:
 
On a computer which has  Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later installed, go to the system partition and to the Windows directory.  Look for the file winhlp32.exe which is 283648 bytes in size in the English version of Windows XP. The size may differ slightly  in other language versions. Copy this file to a diskette or a CD.

Note:

On the Vista Windows directory, there is a small 9 kb file also called winhelp32.exe.  This is but a stub which takes you to the error message cited above.  You can not delete this file even as an administrator in order to replace it with the XP full version.  You must take full control of it in order to do so. Here is a summary of the temporary measure required if you don't wish to use the Microsoft link method:

C:\Windows\WinHlp32.exe

1) Right-click WinHlp32.exe
2) Select Properties
3) Go to the Security tab and click the 'Advanced' button
4) Go to the 'Owner' tab and click the 'Edit' button
5) Select 'Administrators' and click 'Apply' button

Once you've done that you have taken 'Ownership' of the file. Now close out all open property boxes

6) Right-click WinHlp32.exe again
7) Select Properties
8) Go to the Security tab again, click the 'Advanced' button
9) Now Press Edit, then double-click 'Administrators' in the list and check the 'allow' box for 'Full control'

You've now taken 'Full control' of the file. Close out all open property boxes again.

Now you can replace the file:
C:Windows\WinHlp32.exe

You many want to rename the old WinHlp32.exe to WinHlp32.exe.old

Hopefully, Microsoft will offer a download with an installable version of winhlp32.exe, but if not, the above method has been tested with RTM Build Version 6000 of Vista Ultimate and it will probably work with other versions.
